Through courses in hotel management and restaurant management, you will learn the essential operational skills and management techniques employers value in this vibrant business. Durham College’s program also offers a co-op option where students to gain practical experience in the field, and an experiential learning component that builds on what students learn in their classroom-based hospitality industry training. To apply to our Hospitality - Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management program, you will need:
This hospitality management program is also offered in a fast-track format (16 months) from January or May until the following April or August. Students complete all four semesters consecutively. January-start students finish the following April; May-start students finish the following August. The co-op option is not available under the fast-track format, however, students still complete 120 hours of field placement work experience.
Durham College (DC) offers pre-admission assessment testing to mature domestic applicants to meet admission requirements in English and/or math. Domestic applicants that are 19 years of age or older as of the start date of their program, and who do not have the required program credit(s) i.e., Grade 12 English and/or Grade 12 math are eligible to take an admissions assessment test.

In the first semester of the Hospitality - Hotel and Restaurant Management program, students dive right into the exciting, dynamic world of hotels and tourism. Providing hospitality industry training through a mix of practical skills and industry knowledge, this popular program starts off strong.
In the initial hospitality management courses, students sharpen communication abilities, learn how to use hospitality technology, get an overview of the tourism and hospitality industries and gain insights into delivering top-notch customer service. The semester also introduces students to tantalizing global culinary techniques while maintaining a critical focus on food safety and nutrition.
To round out this foundational hospitality industry training, students complete coursework in leadership and teamwork, crucial topics for anyone aspiring to a management position in the industry.

Co-op is a model of education that integrates academic coursework with workplace learning in fields relevant to our students’ academic and personal goals. This outstanding program offers comprehensive hospitality industry training with a focus the management of hotel, restaurant, and tourism enterprises. It is designed to provide you with a solid foundation of in the professional skills needed to start a career in hospitality management with confidence, applying the theory learned in the classroom building your own professional network.
The curriculum is built on three key themes: profitable business management, exemplary customer service and sustainable hospitality management practices. Each course will take you on an exploration of the various business aspects of the hospitality service industry, including:
Throughout Year 1 and into Year 2 of the program, you will develop essential skills around teamwork, decision-making, critical thinking and leadership. In Semester 4, you will also participate in a capstone course where you will apply the skills you have gained, operating a full-service hotel through a robust simulation program.

For students completing a field placement, their classroom-based hospitality industry training will be complemented by a 120-hour field placement opportunity in the fourth semester. This will provide the opportunity to integrate theory with practice under the supervision of an industry professional. Students work at hotels, restaurants, catering companies, food service operations, golf courses, tourism operations or other locations, applying skills from their courses in hotel management on the job.
From student-focused special events to employment in the restaurant at the W. Galen Weston Centre for Food to special projects, there are countless opportunities for students to further their hospitality industry training beyond the labs.
If you would like to continue your education after completing your hospitality management courses, you may be eligible to apply your academic credits towards further study through Durham College partnerships with Canadian and international colleges and universities. These include:

Co-op is an excellent way to build your professional network, explore career paths and apply in-class teachings to real work as a hotel or restaurant operations manager, under the supervision of an experienced professional. Co-op is a model of education that integrates academic learning with workplace learning in fields relevant to our students’ academic and personal goals.
Each September, students starting in the Hospitality – Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management Diploma program can apply to the co-op option during their first academic semester. Entrance to the co-op option is limited and the processes for securing a work term are competitive, therefore students are asked to prepare early and diligently.
Supports are available through the Experiential Learning office to assist students with securing their work terms. In addition, the Experiential Learning office is in contact with co-op students and their employers during the work terms to help with any questions. Upon completing the work term, co-op students return to campus to complete their final two academic semesters of the program before graduating.
*Co-op is only available for students who start the Hospitality – Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management program each September or January

Once transferred to the co-op option of this program, students will have a co-op administrative fee of $475 assessed to their accounts during the academic semester(s) prior to scheduled work term(s). The administrative fee goes to support the broad array of support services provided to co-op students. These services are dedicated to support student success.
