Library Technician Field Work I

LIBR 5089

Supervised experience in libraries is essential in the development of library skills. Students do two separate work assignments in two different types of libraries. The goal of field work is to broaden the student's educational experience to include the varied services of different types of libraries and to enable the student to apply the information gained in course work to the practices and procedures employed in individual libraries.

Students must register for the Field Work courses through Durham College via the link(s) below. Once the course starts you will have access to the required field placement documentation to complete (note, you are NOT required to complete any Durham College field placement paperwork).

Students are encouraged to email the Program Specialist, Dolores Harms Penner prior to registering to work together to make placement arrangements.

Students will work with the facilitator and program specialist, based on your discussion, will contact one of the agreed-upon libraries to make your field placement arrangements. The field placement is 112 hours in length plus an online seminar and marked as a PASS/FAIL course. For more information regarding the field placement please visit and click the heading "Field Placement".

Based on the Canadian Library Association document on the education of library technician programs, which governs our program, students cannot complete their Field Placements in their place of work and preferably not in the institution where the program is located.
