This course provides the RN/RPN with the knowledge and skills required to care for the well newborn. It also provided an introduction to the infant at risk immediately after birth as well as during the first 48 hours. The transitions of the neonate from intrauterine to extrauterine life are explored. Immediate assessment of the infant and family include physiological, behavioural and cognitive aspects. The health teaching role of the RN/RPN will assist the family as they develop their new roles as parents. Perinatal bereavement strategies are discussed.
For the Winter 2021 term, this course will offered online via a combination of asynchronous learning (via Durham College’s Learning Management System, called DC Connect) and live online sessions delivered through an online video communications system (i.e. Zoom). The two mandatory live online sessions are scheduled for Wednesday, January 20th (6:10-9:10 p.m.) AND Wednesday, February 3rd, 2021 (6:10-9:10 p.m.). Students will need a computer with a webcam, audio, and a reliable high-speed Internet connection to participate.
Tuition fee includes a $3 non-tax deductible fee.
