The CFAA Fire Alarm Technician training is designed for current industry professionals looking to obtain their CFAA registration.  For those that meet the entrance requirements, they will be able to enroll in the required 5 courses set by the CFAA.

Students will complete the CFAA certification process which allows them to legally work on fire alarm systems in Ontario and other provinces. Students who successfully complete this course/program with a 60% or higher will be able to work within this popular field.  Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of fire alarm systems and the skills that are required vital for immediate success.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Working (or worked) within the fire technician, fire protection, or fire enforcement for a minimum of 6 months or more, or professionally trained within the electrical and/or electronics field
  • Exceptional critical listening skills
  • Confident with the English language (both in written and verbal form)

Durham College is pleased to grant access toour state-of-the-art Fire Protection lab. 

This course will provide the practical experience required to test, inspect and maintain fire alarm systems in accordance to regulations set by the Ontario based legalities.

Description:

Practical training is extremely beneficial as a practice is crucial for all novice and intermediate technicians.  The course provides hands on practical exposure to the operational methodologies of fire alarm equipment. Students will gain a deeper understanding of fire alarm functionality and operational principles on conventional and intelligent systems. The subject themes include practical, hands on learning of automatic fire detection, control panels, wiring methodologies, annunciation, voice communication, shooting and documentation. The course provides detailed and practical experience of testing and verification procedures required by the Ontario building codes, fire codes and related ULC standards.  Students will also learn and apply the appropriate methodologies and requirements of completing ULC inspection reports.

This is NOT a required course for the CFAA yet extremely beneficial for necessary practice.

 Length of Course:  40 hours

  • Must be registered with the CFAA (completed courses 1 through 5)…proof required
  • Working (or worked) within the fire technician field for a minimum of 6 months or more

  • Must own and bring personal tools and equipment for practical training
