Focus will be on the proof required for submissions and acting in the client’s best interests. Contingency retainers will be briefly reviewed.

This night will be an opportunity for attendees to observe a full provincial offences trial.  Through observation of the professionals, attendees will gain an understanding of the process involved in advocating a provincial offences trial, including examination in chief and cross examinations.

Attendees will be provided with the list of case law used for further reference, and a question and answer period will be reserved for the end of the evening.

This night is intended to provide LSO licensees, students, and graduates with an understanding of effective file handling from opening, including complying with client identification and verification requirements, timely and effective client communication, best practices for retainer agreements, to the drafting of reporting letters, legal opinions, and final accounts. Attendees will learn various methods of effectively closing and retaining files. Financial record keeping requirements, managing client expectations, and managing difficult clients will be stressed throughout the seminar. This is an interactive workshop in which attendees will be provided with enhanced precedents and opportunities to discuss practice management components within small groups.

This evening is dedicated to assisting attendees with enhancing their advocacy skills pursuant to By-law 11 of the Paralegal Rules of Conduct. Attendees will be taught how to speak clearly and concisely with a focus on courtroom etiquette, conduct in and out of the court, examination in chief, cross examination and the substantive concepts of submissions.  Further focus will center on courtesy pursuant to Rules 4 and 7 of the Paralegal Rules of Conduct.  Attendees will discuss the importance and practicality of courtesy to opposing counsel, duty to the client, duty to the court, communication with witnesses and how to effectively deal with self represented. Attendees will be provided with a Certificate of Attendance.

This night will provide attendees with a thorough introduction to the Assessment Review Board (Ontario) from a Defendant’s representative perspective beginning with an introduction to the Assessment Act.  Procedures including statutory filing dates, disclosure and obtaining property assessment details will be provided in addition to the substantive concepts required when calculating property value.  An introduction to the direct to hearing and standard stream hearing processes will be presented with a view to the Rules of Conduct for licensees in relation to licensees providing evidence as witnesses.

This night will focus on fundamentals of practice in Provincial Offences, Criminal, Small Claims Court, SABS and Human Rights. It will be an interactive evening of short presentations in each topic area followed by substantive questions for attendees to answer and discuss for the purposes of introductions to new subject matter for 1st year students, review in practice for licensees, and review and preparation for the LSO P1 examination for graduates and candidates.

(Segments will be divided into ½ hour intense workshops)
