COVID-19 Update: Important change to COVID-19 protocols

This message is being sent on behalf of the Durham College (DC) Return-to-Work Task Force.

In response to the rapid increase in COVID-19 transmission, the Ontario government has reviewed recommendations for COVID-19 risk mitigation, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). As outlined in the government’s guidance for enhanced health and safety measures, “Workers must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) that protects their eyes, nose and mouth if in the course of providing services they are:

  • required to come within 2 metres of another person who is not wearing a mask or face covering or
  • in an indoor area and are not separated by plexiglass or some other impermeable barrier.”

With this, the following safety protocol is to be followed while on campus:

  • A face mask is to be worn at all times.
  • When 2-metre distancing cannot be maintained at all times, a medical-grade face mask and eye protection must be worn.

Eye protection provides a barrier to infectious materials entering the eye and is often used in conjunction with other PPE. Unless otherwise specified for a particular space, at minimum, eye protection should fit comfortably and include side shields. A face shield will also offer this protection if preferred; however, this does not replace the need to wear a face mask. In environments where the risk of exposure is greater, heightened levels of eyewear such as goggles may be recommended by your supervisor.

In order to streamline the process, employees are asked to submit their request for eye protection to the following:
