COVID-19 Update: New COVID-19 case reported at Durham College Oshawa campus – April 13

A new COVID-19 case has been reported at Durham College’s Oshawa campus.

Tuesday, April 13

  • A member of the Durham College (DC) Oshawa campus community has tested positive for COVID-19. They were last on campus in the A-Wing of the Gordon Willey building on Monday, April 5.
  • Those who are at risk have been contacted by DC and will be contacted by the Durham Region Health Department (DRHD).
  • DRHD has deemed that there is a low risk to the campus community.
  • This case is unrelated to any other case that has been reported on campus.

  • Risk mitigation measures, such as extensive disinfecting, have been implemented as appropriate.
  • DC is working closely with DRHD for contact tracing and is supporting individuals who are required to self-isolate.
  • Individuals who are at risk of COVID-19 transmission as a result of this case have been contacted by DRHD, are being monitored and are isolating at home.
    • If DRHD asks you to isolate, or if you test positive, your first step should always be to notify our health and safety team outlined in our COVID-19 reporting protocol. Please do not return to campus until you have been cleared by DC’s health and safety team.
    • If an employee or student receives a positive COVID-19 test, DRHD assesses the risk of transmission within the campus community, as well as the need for contact tracing and follow-up. DRHD provides direction to DC to mitigate any risk of community transmission. DC provides DRHD with information to help with contact tracing.
  • If you have not been contacted, classes and activities continue as scheduled.

If feeling unwell:

  • DC has developed a COVID-19 reporting protocol to ensure all situations that may arise for those visiting or living on campus are isolated and contained.
  • Do not come to campus if you’re feeling unwell or have had exposure to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.
  • If you become aware of someone who is perceived to be ill, or has tested positive, or if you live with or have otherwise come into contact with someone who has been exposed or has tested positive and has been to campus, follow the steps outlined in our COVID-19 reporting protocol document.
  • If you are feeling unwell, or aren’t sure whether or not you should come to campus, please stay home and seek guidance from Public Health.
  • If you have received a COVID-19 test, you are required to remain at home until you are cleared by DC’s health and safety team.

If you must come to campus:

  • Prior to arriving on campus, complete the mandatory one minute COVID-19 screening questionnaire.
  • All students, employees and visitors are required to wear a mask at all times while on campus.
  • Masks may only be removed in designated eating areas while eating and must be put back on once eating is complete.
  • Eating is not permitted outside of designated spaces, such as lounges and hallways.
  • Follow all of DC’s preventative safety measures.

The health and safety of our students and employees is of utmost importance. These stringent COVID-19 requirements have been developed with guidance from public health authorities and are to be followed by all community members when on our campuses. It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure the health and well-being of our classmates and colleagues through the mandatory use of masks while on campus, as well as following the preventative safety measures.
