Tuesday, November 30 will mark the 10th Anniversary of the First Peoples Indigenous Centre (FPIC), formerly the Aboriginal Student Centre. In October of 2011, the Aboriginal Student Centre opened its doors in the Simcoe building and was gifted with the Anishinaabemowin name Suswaaning Endaajig “A Nest Away from Home” by Elder and Traditional Knowledge Keeper, Gerard Sagassige. This space was created as a place for Indigenous students to feel at home and supported by community. On October 2, 2018, the Aboriginal Student Centre moved into its new home the First Peoples Indigenous Centre (FPIC) in the Centre for Collaborative Education (CFCE).

Over the past decade, Durham College (DC) has taken significant steps to create an inclusive environment for Indigenous students and community members, as well as a place for other members of the DC community to learn more about the Indigenous way of knowing. FPIC provides students with access to Elders and Traditional Knowledge Keepers, sacred medicines, culturally specific programming and support, and is home to many Indigenous events including a language revitalization program, Full Moon ceremonies, Powwows, and more.

To mark this momentous occasion, students, employees and community members are invited to drop by the FPIC 10th Anniversary Open House on Tuesday, November 30 between 1 and 4 p.m. for the opportunity to celebrate the Indigenization efforts we have achieved over the past 10 years.

Join us to:

-Create a dream catcher or Indigenous beading craft;
-Participate in our 20th Anniversary Video Archive project; and
-Explore photo collages of FPIC through the years.
