What is the Durham College (DC) Student Success Pathway – General Arts and Science Success (GASS)?
GASS is a four-month remedial program created by DC in partnership with the Ontario Tech University (Ontario Tech). Developed for first-year Ontario Tech students who have been notified of their academic suspension, the GASS program is designed to help students strengthen their fundamental academic skills and life management strategies. It will run from May to August and be delivered in-person at DC’s Oshawa campus. Students enrolled in the GASS program will have the opportunity to customize their learning pathway to obtain the education they need to succeed.
What are the benefits of the GASS Program?
The GASS program offers several key benefits. Upon successful completion students:
- Will be eligible to return to their Ontario Tech program one semester early in the fall.
- Will be able to return to their Ontario Tech program with minimal disruption.
- Will have the fundamental academic skills needed to achieve academic success at Ontario Tech.
- May be eligible to earn a General Arts and Science certificate in conjunction with the continuation of their university degree.
When does the GASS program start?
Classes begin on Monday, May 13, 2019.
When is the deadline to apply?
The GASS program application deadline is Friday, May 17, 2019. Students are encouraged to let their academic advisors know as soon as possible if they are interested in the GASS program as seats are limited.
How do I apply?
In order to apply, students must attend a registration information session.

Seats are limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
All students must make a $500 non-refundable deposit at the time of registration, payable by credit card, debit or money order. Money orders should be made payable to Durham College.
All students must bring their Ontario Tech student cards to their registration session.
International students must also bring the following:
- Passport and Canadian study permit.
What is the grade requirement needed to be remitted to Ontario Tech for the fall semester?
To be eligible to return to their Ontario Tech program in the fall semester, students must pass the GASS program with a 70 per cent (B-) average, with no individual course grade below 65.
What courses will I need to take?
The GASS program requires students to take four core courses and two electives. The four core courses are as follows:
- Academic success.
- Two fundamentals of communications courses.
- A math course.
In addition, students will select two elective courses which may also be prescribed by the student’s Ontario Tech Academic Advisor.
How much will the GASS program cost? When and where do I pay?
The cost of the GASS program for domestic students is $2,171.43. Students must pay their $500 non-refundable deposit at their registration session (the deposit will come off of the balance owing).
The cost for international students is $7,410.95, which includes $158.33 for a mandatory health insurance plan for all international students. If a student provides proof of equal or better coverage to the international office, this fee will be waived. Students must pay their $500 non-refundable deposit at their registration session (the deposit will come off of the balance owing).
