Why do I apply internally to be accepted into the MKTU program?

The MKTU program includes university courses. The Ontario Tech University (Ontario Tech) requires students to apply and meet a minimum grade requirement for admission to their courses.

How do I apply internally to be accepted into the MKTU program?

A session is planned where we provide information and distribute the application forms for both Durham College (DC) and Ontario Tech. Follow the instructions on the forms and submit them to Room C223 by the deadline.

Can I apply for credit transfer?

If you have studied previously at DC or another recognized post-secondary institution, you may be eligible to receive credit for the courses you have successfully completed. Applications for credit transfer will be reviewed in partnership with Ontario Tech on an individual basis. What is the grade requirement to be in the program?

We recommend that students have a 4.0 or ‘A’ (85 to 89 per cent) average in their Semester 1, Year 1 DC courses before they apply to the MKTU program for semester two; however, the requirement is a ‘B+’ (75 to 79 per cent) or 3.5 GPA in the DC courses.

You must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 in all DC courses and receive a minimum ‘C’ (60 to 66 per cent) grade in each of the Ontario Tech courses. Each institution has different grading systems. Please see each of the institutional charts.

Do I have to participate in Ontario Tech’s Technology Enriched Learning Environment and lease a laptop from Ontario Tech?

No, students in the MKTU program are not required to lease a laptop.

Can I repeat a Ontario Tech course if I fail it?

Yes. Please note: students are only permitted to repeat a course once and will need to pay the full university fee to retake the course. Please contact Ontario Tech for the policy on repeating a course as well as for registration information such as deadlines, fee and schedule information.

What are the five embedded Ontario Tech courses that I need to take?

The embedded Ontario Tech courses you take are

  • Critical Thinking & Ethics,
  • Financial Accounting,
  • Organizational Behaviour,
  • Finance I and
  • Business Math.

*Courses and program of studies are subject to change by DC and Ontario Tech.

What diploma will I graduate with?

DC diploma will indicate: Marketing – Business (two year).

Can I major at Ontario Tech?

Yes, as an additional opportunity, you can major in marketing at Ontario Tech, however; in order to major in Marketing you will be required to obtain the following:

  • A minimum ‘C’ (60 to 66 per cent) grade in each of the five embedded Ontario Tech courses taken during the MKTU studies.
  • A minimum 70 per cent in the following DC courses: MKTG 1200, MKTG 2200, MKTG 3207 and MKTG 4200.

If I complete the two-year MKTU diploma, but don’t want to continue to Ontario Tech can I enter Year 3 of the Marketing – Business Administration program at DC?

Yes, but not directly. You would need to complete the missing Year 2 Marketing courses prior to entering Year 3. You would need to take these courses as a part-time student or through the School of Continuing Education. It could delay a year of studies due to the outstanding courses and the fact that Year 3 only begins in September.

Can I make schedule (timetable) changes?

This is occasionally possible for DC courses but not for Ontario Tech courses.

It is preferred that you remain in the scheduled block so you are together as a cohort. This makes it easier to plan sessions for you and get important information to you in person. Be prepared to be in class at DC for 14 weeks (the length of a semester) anywhere between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.; and in class at Ontario Tech anywhere between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. throughout the week.

Are there differences when learning at two institutions?

Yes, there are many. You are at two separate institutions with varying expectations, procedures and policies. You are required to adhere to both institutional policies. There can also be different break weeks and varying exam schedules (i.e. a Ontario Tech exam on a Saturday night). MKTU is a unique program and some services will require more attention. If you experience a delay in service or response time, please be patient.

What Learning Management System (LMS) does Ontario Tech use?

Ontario Tech uses Blackboard. Your embedded Ontario Tech courses will not appear on DC Connect; you will need to access Blackboard for the Ontario Tech course information.

Do I still use MyCampus?

Absolutely. MyCampus is for administrative records, final grades, registration, fees and important messages and should be checked on a regular basis. Both institutions use MyCampus as a primary system but with different tabs.

Where, how and when do I pay the Ontario Tech fees?

Your account will be updated with the fees you owe through MyCampus (Ontario Tech tab). Please check your account and ensure you have paid all course fees. You may pay these fees through a bank transfer or bank draft. Bank drafts can be submitted in person in the Software and Informatics Research Centre located across the street at 40 Conlin Road West.

If you have applied for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) and it is delayed, you will need to make an appointment in Student Awards and Financial Aid at Ontario Tech to make payment arrangements. You cannot have an OSAP deferment of fees for your Ontario Tech courses.

What happens after Semester 2?

When your Semester 2 final grades are available from both institutions (Ontario Tech final grades are typically posted shortly after DC), they will be reviewed to determine if you can proceed into Year 2 of the MKTU program or if you will be transferred into the Marketing – Business program. You are required to have a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA and a minimum ‘C’ grade in the Ontario Tech course(s). If you are continuing with the MKTU program you will be invoiced and will need to pay your fees (DC fees are paid through DC; Ontario Tech fees are paid to Ontario Tech directly).

What happens after Year 2?

You are required to have successfully completed all Year 1 and 2 courses with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and a minimum ‘C’ in the five embedded Ontario Tech courses to apply to enter Year 3 of the four-year Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) degree at Ontario Tech. Admissions staff at Ontario Tech in conjunction with DC, will schedule an information session (typically in March of Semester 4) to respond to questions and explain the application process for Ontario Tech. Please attend this session.
