About this class

Many of us are overwhelmed, fearful, and feel powerless facing (or not) the challenges of today’s complex connected world. In our conversation with Megan Myles, we will explore ways to re-connect to our backyards, communities and beyond. Social change starts with a conversation.

We will explore:

  • Building your network/community
  • Social change relies on relationships, a group of people with a shared goal/values who have mutual trust and respect. Who are the people who will be your co-conspirators?
  • Learn your local context, become the expert of your own backyard, know the issues, the people and the landscape
  • Social change is a slow, messy and unpredictable process of trial and error. It’s sometimes fast, sometimes slow. Patience is essential.
  • Learn to listen, ask questions, build connections

If you are joining the live class, please connect 15 minutes before the start of the class and sit close to your camera and microphone. If there are resources you would like to add, please send them to Lon.Appleby@durhamcollege.ca.

Understanding the world as a whole . . .

The objective of a global class is to encourage interaction between groups of people from different parts of the world while giving them the opportunity to engage directly with a global thinker, doer, or researcher.

The class is a conversation, an intercultural back-and-forth in which the host and guest are among the participants.

Before the class, please familiarize yourself with the resources posted here on this page for the class. Give some thought to what you might want to ask or say, perhaps even prepare a statement you would like to make.

The intent is to develop creative and critical thinking for the complex world we live in. By the end of the 90-minute class, the participants will have explored a shared issue, been introduced to new perspectives, improved their problem solving skills, enriched their understanding of world as a whole.

After the class, participants are welcome to continue the conversation at the forum on this class page where the live class also remains. Assignments can be posted on the class page along with resources that participants may wish to share with one another.

See you in class!
