Cognitive-Behavioural Based Treatment Strategies

This course builds on the knowledge and skills gained in the first semester ‘Introduction to Counselling Practices' [ADDC1508] and ‘Theories, Models and Approaches to Addiction, Mental Health and Psychotherapy' [ADDC1509] courses. Students will be provided with more detailed information about the theoretical foundations of Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy to add to the knowledge base built in the first semester. Students will also develop their skills in cognitive-behaviour-based treatment approaches which can be used in counselling roles when working with addictions/mental health clients. Current applications of DBT-informed therapeutic strategies used when working with addictions/mental health clients, such as teaching emotion regulation skills and mindfulness skills, will also be explored and practiced. Throughout the course, students will be asked to reflect on the safe and effective use of self (SEUS) in the therapeutic relationship. Emphasis in the course will be placed on experiential learning
