Introduction to Audiology

This course will provide students with a basic understanding of the fundamentals of sound, the human auditory mechanism, auditory pathologies and syndromes, the basic principles of measuring hearing sensitivity, speech understanding ability, and middle ear function and screening for hearing loss. Types of hearing aids, components and their function as well as hearing aid troubleshooting, and basic electro-acoustic analysis of hearing aids will be introduced. Test measures and topics specific to pediatric, adult, non-compliant and special needs populations will also be explored. Ontario's newborn hearing screening program is also discussed. This course includes a lab component where students can practice, using a variety of audiological equipment, the skills learned with their classmates as well as the opportunity to assist with hearing screenings of children and/or adults.
