Bio-Regulations (BIOT 4131) is a one-semester course with two scheduled hours of lecture per week. This course will provide students with an understanding of vital legislation, procedures and policies that exist to regulate workplaces in general and biotechnology-related workplaces in particular. Federal and provincial legislation and guidelines as they apply to biotechnology will be examined. Students will become familiar with Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS 2015), Laboratory Biosafety, agricultural biotechnology and Canadian food safety regulations, HACCP, Occupational Health and Safety in the workplace, regulations for labeling and manufacturing cosmetics, current medical cannabis regulations, radiation safety, and ISO 9000, 17025 and 14000. Students will apply their understanding of these regulations to case studies.
