Introduction To Exceptionalities

Who is the child with special needs? What is it like having special needs? How do parents and families deal with their exceptional children? What can early childhood educators do in their programs to meet the needs of children with exceptionalities? In this course, students will be given an introduction to the theoretical as well as the practical issues involved in working with children with exceptionalities. The course will be punctuated with visits by guest speakers who are involved in services for children with exceptionalities and their families, videotapes and films, and in-class simulation experiences. The end result will be that graduating second-year students will have a good understanding of children with exceptionalities and ways in which they, as educators, can provide appropriate programs to meet the children's needs.
