Workflow Production

This course will utilize advanced prepress technology as a means to prepare the student to work as a designer in a studio environment. Topics include calibrating monitors; colour correction of images; colour management; creating documents with process and Pantone inks; prepress workflow systems and printing methods. The initial phase of the course will deal with advanced colour calibration and colour systems. The next phase will involve learning the skills necessary to produce final plate separations from InDesign and proper setup of InDesign digital files for different printing and binding situations. Students will also learn to apply special finishes (i.e. varnishes, foils, etc.) to their InDesign documents. The final phase will introduce students to PDF technology and how to produce PDF files for press conditions using this format. Lectures, demonstrations and both theoretical and practical assignments will be included. While studies in this course will ensure students have a thorough understanding of computer applications as they apply to prepress, some projects may cross over into other design disciplines.
