Food & Pharmaceutical Science

This is a three hour lecture course designed to introduce the student to pharmaceutical and food science technology. The Canadian pharmaceutical industry and how it's regulated is introduced. Students will examine basic pharmaceutical forms along with product quality control and assurance and product labeling requirements. Functional Foods, Non-Prescription Natural Health Products, and Cannabis are defined and the industry examined. Cannabis for Medical Purposes regulations are introduced with basic understanding and overview of the current regulations. Natural Health product regulations are introduced with labeling requirements. The Food industry is introduced along with its regulations and food product labeling requirements. Food Science and Technology is examined through the introduction of the major and minor components of food. Students will also be introduced to the functionality of these components in food processing and the management of product quality.
