Chromatography is a powerful technique used by scientists to separate and analyze the components of a mixture. It is an essential tool for evaluating the safety, content, and quality of samples from food, environmental, pharmaceutical, biological and chemical sources. Chromatography I is a foundational course which introduces the theory and principles of this technique. The various types of chromatography, reverse and normal phase, affinity, ion exchange, and size exclusion/gel permeation, will be introduced along with their application in thin layer and column chromatography. The laboratory component of the course allows students to gain practical hands-on training on High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-MS), Ion Chromatography (IC) and Gas Chromatography (GC) equipment to apply the theory and knowledge presented in lecture. This course serves as a prerequisite to Chromatography II, which will expand and build upon the foundational knowledge gained herein.
