Business and Family Law

This course examines the legal issues financial planners face. Following an introduction to the Canadian legal system, students will examine how they as financial planners can engage in corporate social responsibility. Students will examine the fundamentals of tort and contract law. Students will then consider employment law issues that they will face as financial planners, employees and business owners. Students will then discuss the legal implications of one's marital status, including issues pertaining to common law and same sex partners, and how it impacts the division of property upon separation or divorce. Students will analyze child and spousal support obligations upon separation or divorce. Students will consider the requirements for a legally valid will and trust, and the purpose of powers of attorney.
