Officer Safety - Practicum II
Law enforcement personnel are routinely called upon to interact with people who exhibit behaviours that range from cooperative to outright hostile. A variety of strategies such as verbal de-escalation and conflict management are required to deal with potentially volatile situations. This course builds upon the foundational content covered in the first officer safety course, and introduces the use of intermediate non-lethal options and restraints, while focusing on maintaining situational control of an incident during a use-of-force encounter. Students will be introduced to effective communication and de-escalation strategies, as well as single and multiple officer response tactics, utilizing scenario based learning. The course includes theory and practical components, and students will be required to participate in both the lecture and the practical sessions in order to be successful.
