Mental Health for Emergency Responders

Issues relating to Mental Health are highly prevalent in Canadian society. Having a basic understanding of mental illness and the different types prepares emergency services personnel to better deal with potential issues related to these types of responses. This course will address issues relating to the development of addictions as well as seeking to provide a greater understanding to the differences between Mental Health, Mental Illness and Mental Disorders. Students will explore best practices approach to mental health care through learning activities that encompass practical theory and new developments in the field of law enforcement and emergency services. Students will also examine the value of self-care for first responders and develop strategies to support wellness of self and colleagues. Students gain a perspective on principles of mental health, disorders and behaviour management, as well as the mental health system and evidence-based practice.
