Microsoft 365 (M365) OneDrive and SharePoint Online update to default sharing permissions

This message is being sent on behalf of IT Services. Please direct any questions to servicedesk@durhamcollege.ca

Durham College (DC) is updating the default sharing permissions in DC’s Microsoft 365 (M365) cloud for OneDrive and SharePoint Online. This change will apply to all DC M365 cloud users and will take effect July 15, 2024.

To protect user and college data from unintended access, the default sharing permissions for all files in OneDrive and SharePoint Online when shared via a link will change from “People in Durham College” which is visible to anyone in DC who is logged into DC’s M365 with their DC credentials to the new default of “People you Choose” which will share the file with specific people you choose—inside or outside of Durham College—using their name, group or email.

Users can change the default setting when sharing files with others by selecting an alternative option.

When you share an assignment or file with a faculty member, you will need to select “People You Choose” then type in the individual’s name or full email address.

All students should continue to keep login credentials private. IT Services will never ask you for your password. If you forget your password, or exceed the maximum number of failed login attempts, passwords can be reset using the self-service portal at https://www.durhamcollege.ca/reset
