Recognizing Human Rights Day

This message is shared on behalf of Dr. Elaine Popp, President.

Today, Durham College (DC) joins the global community in recognizing Human Rights Day, an opportunity to reflect on the universal commitment to dignity, freedom, equality, and justice for all. This year, we reaffirm our dedication to advancing human rights at every level — global, national, and personal — and invite our community to consider how these principles guide our actions and shape our future.

At DC, we are committed to fostering a safe, respectful, welcoming, and inclusive environment where everyone can learn, work, and thrive. This commitment is evident in our equity-driven policies, initiatives to identify and dismantle systemic barriers, support for accommodations when needed, and opportunities to build meaningful connections within our community. Through these efforts, we strive to make equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging not just ideals, but everyday realities.

As part of this work, we acknowledge the vital importance of equity and of Indigeneity in our community. We know that equity-deserving groups — those who have historically experienced barriers because of their identities — often encounter significant challenges to their rights and opportunities. As a college community, we recognize our unique role in confronting these injustices and creating a future where equity-deserving groups are empowered and their rights upheld.

Education is a powerful tool for advancing human rights. At DC, we are uniquely positioned to prepare students to become leaders and active contributors to a just and equitable society. By embedding equity, diversity, and inclusion into everything we do, we ensure that every individual has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background, identity, or circumstances.

As we celebrate Human Rights Day, I encourage all members of the DC community to reflect on their role in upholding these fundamental values. Participate in events, engage in conversations, and take personal action to support a culture of equality and respect. Together, we can build a community that not only champions human rights but embodies them in every interaction.

By working collaboratively and purposefully, we move closer to a world where everyone is treated with dignity, respect, and fairness — today and every day.
