Are you starting your program this September? As a full-time Durham College (DC) student, you have access to health and dental benefits. Here’s what you need to know about opting-in or out of the Durham College Student Association (DCSA) Health and Dental Plan.
The policy year for September-start students begins Tuesday, September 1, 2026 and coverage continues until Tuesday, August 31, 2027.
Note: The current opt-in and opt-out only applies to September 2026 intake students, and only full-time students are eligible for the Health and Dental Coverage. Not sure if you are considered full-time? Contact Enrolment Services.
DCSA Health & Dental Plan (Full-time Domestic and International Students)
The DCSA Health & Dental Plan covers prescription medication, dental, vision, chiropractor, massage, physiotherapy, etc. Your policy number is 0091963000 and is insured through Medavie Blue Cross. To manage the DCSA Health & Dental Plan, we encourage you to download the Medavie Blue Cross mobile app. On the app, you can submit claims, view coverage and so much more. Download the app by visiting the Medavie website.
Your Blue Cross ID number is your student ID number, followed by two zeroes.
To download your health and dental plan card:
- Go to studentvip.ca/dcsa
- Select “PLAN CARDS”
- Select “Download your Health & Dental Plan Card”
- Register to set up your Student VIP Account
- You can also add your plan card to “Google Wallet” or “Apple Wallet”
Looking to opt-out of the plan?
Students with other health and dental coverage can elect to opt-out of the DCSA-provided plan. To opt-out, students must visit the Student VIP website and complete the online opt-out form by Wednesday, September 30. You will be required to provide proof of other coverage.
Need to extend your coverage to other family members?
Adding dependents and partners or spouses is easy, but opt-in must be done before Wednesday, September 30. Check out the Student VIP website for more details.
International students
International students are enrolled under two mandatory health insurance plans and can opt dependents into both coverages. Dependents must have International insurance provided by Student VIP or an OHIP alternative to be eligible for the Health and Dental Plan.
The deadline to opt your dependents into the International Insurance and the Health and Dental Plan is Wednesday, September 30. If your dependents arrive in Canada after the deadline, you have 30 days to arrange the opt-in. You will need to provide proof of the arrival date. Contact Donna Judson for more information.
International Insurance provides your basic insurance coverage for visiting the doctor for illness, injury or medical emergencies.
To download your International Insurance and health and dental benefit card:
1. Go to www.studentvip.ca
2. Select “Durham College Student Association”
3. Select PLAN CARDS
4. Select International Health Plan Card
5. Register to set up an online profile
6. Please print a paper copy as this is required by medical clinics for billing purposes.
