Opportunities abroad Current opportunity FLCA@Home and Away: Intercultural learning with Indigenous and traditional peoples around the world PROGRAM OVERVIEW Reconciliation with Indigenous communities is and should be important to all students at Durham College (DC), which is why the Faculty-Led Classroom Abroad at Home and Away (FLCA@Home and Away) program has been created. Funded by Global Skills Opportunity, the Government of Canada’s Outbound Student Mobility Pilot Program, FLCA@Home and Away will give students the opportunity to get involved in a project that will help foster an understanding of what reconciliation means in Canada and around the world, while building the cross-cultural skills needed as a global citizen and as a professional. HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW FLCA@Home and Away consists of one semester of virtual activities, followed by future global travel opportunities to participating countries (when global travel is feasible). The fees to participate (both at home and in the international travel) are covered by the program funding. There will be multiple projects open to students, led by faculty from DC’s academic schools. WINTER 2022 PROJECT The first project is the FLCA@Home: Storytelling in Winter 2022, which will virtually connect DC students with Indigenous and traditional communities in Guatemala, to learn, interact, and exchange knowledge and skills and develop a foundation for Reconciliation at home. The FLCA@Home: Storytelling – Winter 2022 is an extra-curricular activity consisting of online pre-participation training, five virtual workshops running from late January 2022 to late March 2022, and a final showcase of co-created projects. Participants will be awarded a certificate upon project completion. Due to current uncertainty of global travel, the Winter 2022 project will be entirely virtual.
