If you are interested in working in Canada after completing your studies, you will want to consider a program that meets the field of study requirement for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). A PGWP is issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and may allow you to work in Canada after completing your studies. IRCC determines PGWP eligibility. Regarding the field of study requirement for PGWP eligibility, you are eligible for a PGWP if either of the following conditions are met: Your program had an eligible CIP code at the time you applied for your study permit, or Your program has an eligible CIP code at the time you apply for a PGWP. WHAT ARE THE MOST RECENT CHANGES FROM IRCC? On June 25, 2025, IRCC announced revised field of study requirements for PGWP. On July 4, 2025, IRCC provided an update on their above announcement. For an international student, this latest update means: If you applied for your study permit for your current program before November 1, 2024, you are eligible for a PGWP regardless of what full-time DC program you are doing. Please ensure you continue meeting the other PGWP eligibility criteria. If you applied for your study permit for your current program on or after November 1, 2024, and your program meets the field of study requirement, you are eligible for a PGWP. Please ensure you continue meeting the other PGWP eligibility criteria. On September 18, 2024, IRCC announced: The number of study permit applications will be reduced by 10%. Students graduating from public college programs can get a PGWP for up to three years if their program is related to jobs that are in long-term demand. New language requirements. As of January 22, 2024, most students must include a provincial attestation letter (PAL) from the province or territory where they plan to study with their study permit application. NEW PROCESS FOR STUDY PERMIT HOLDERS TO CHANGE THEIR SCHOOLS (DLI) Starting November 8, 2024, students who wish to change their post-secondary school must get a new study permit by applying to extend their current study permit. If you are changing your institution to Durham College, for your study permit application, you will need our Letter of Acceptance (LOA), tuition fee receipt and Provincial Attestation Letter, in addition to the other required documents for this application. Please note: For a study permit application, IRCC expects you to prove access to funds to cover a minimum of your annual tuition plus expenses for your first year’s living. Refer to IRCC’s proof of financial support for details. WHAT IS A CLASSIFICATION OF INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMS (CIP CODE)? The Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) is used to classify post-secondary education programs according to field of study in Canada. To be eligible for a PGWP, you need to study in a PGWP eligible field of study, and this means your program needs to match the CIP code listed in the table HERE. When you search for your CIP code, enter the CIP code of your DC program to confirm alignment with IRCC’s PGWP eligible fields of study. WHICH FIELDS OF STUDY ARE ELIGIBLE FOR A PGWP? Eligible fields of study are linked to certain jobs in long-term shortage in Canada and can change based on the needs of the Canadian labour market. If your CIP code is not on the list of currently eligible codes when you apply for a PGWP, it may still be eligible based on when you submitted your study permit application.
