Updates to the International Student Program Updated on October 9, 2024 at 10:49 a.m. In September, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) made some changes to the International Student Program. If you apply for a study permit by October 31, 2024, the current rules still apply. Here are some questions and answers to help explain the changes: What are the most recent changes from the IRCC? The number of study permit applications will be reduced by 10%. Students graduating from public college programs can get a PGWP for up to three years if their program is related to jobs that are in long-term demand. New language requirements have been introduced. Which fields of study are eligible for PGWPs? There are 966 programs that qualify, and they fall into five groups: agriculture and food, healthcare, science and technology, engineering, and trade and transportation. These programs help fill job needs in Canada. When do the new rules start? If you apply for a PGWP before November 1, 2024, the old rules apply. If you apply for a PGWP after November 1, 2024, and you applied for a study permit before this date, you must show English or French language skills when you apply for your PGWP. Please view the language requirements here. If you apply for a study permit after November 1, 2024, you must meet the new requirements for PGWP.
