Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) technicians play a vital role in everyday life—keeping homes comfortable, workplaces productive, and buildings operating safely and efficiently. From installing high-efficiency furnaces to maintaining modern climate control systems, graduates will be prepared for this in-demand industry.
This program delivers hands-on training in Durham College’s fully equipped shops, led by experienced faculty. Students build strong foundational skills and learn industry best practices in heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning. Through applied projects and real-world scenarios, learners gain the skills to install, service, and maintain residential systems.
Graduates will be prepared to challenge the TSSA Gas Technician 3 (G.3) exam.

The core curriculum of the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Techniques (HVAC) program is standardized and accredited by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), the industry’s regulatory body. Students in this program focus on:
Students are exposed to the design and development of systems including the basic need to assist with working on a wide range of furnaces, cooling systems and appliances. They also develop skills in soldering, wiring and electric circuitry for HVAC and gas installation systems
Important TSSA Requirements for HVAC Students
While Durham College course passing grades range from 50% to 70%, depending on the course, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) has higher minimum requirements for students who wish to write the Gas Technician 3 (G.3) or Oil Burner Technician (OB3) exams.
Minimum Grade Requirement
To be eligible to write the TSSA G.3 or OB3 exam, students must achieve a minimum grade of 75% in all required theory and practical courses.
Minimum Attendance Requirement
The TSSA also enforces a strict attendance policy.
Students must maintain a minimum of 80% attendance in all theory and practical courses to be eligible to write the TSSA exam.
Exam Payment Information
Payment for the TSSA exams must be made to CTS at the Whitby campus by the deadline communicated in class and through email.
Durham College (DC) offers pre-admission assessment testing to mature domestic applicants to meet admission requirements in English and/or Math. Domestic applicants who are 19 years of age or older as of the start date of their program, and who do not have the required program credit(s), i.e. Grade 12 English and/or Grade 12 Math are eligible to take an admissions assessment test.
