Durham College (DC) offers pre-admission assessment testing to mature domestic applicants to meet admission requirements in English and/or Math. Domestic applicants who are 19 years of age or older as of the start date of their program, and who do not have the required program credit(s), i.e. Grade 12 English and/or Grade 12 Math are eligible to take an admissions assessment test.

In this program, students explore visual storytelling through a range of media, including photography, video, animation, and motion graphics. The curriculum introduces students to the history of motion, image sequencing, video production, 2D and 3D animation, and 3D printing techniques.
With a strong focus on hands-on learning, students gain practical experience using industry-standard tools and technology. Field trips enhance this learning by offering access to unique industry spaces, such as Durham College’s Motion Capture Studio, local film locations, and creative media facilities, where students get a behind-the-scenes look at professional production environments.
This foundation year also provides insight into five key programs within the Faculty of Media, Art and Design: Animation – Digital Production, Game – Art, Graphic Design, Interactive Media Design, and Video Production. Students build a diverse, portfolio-ready body of work showcasing both technical and artistic abilities – ideal for applying to advanced programs or launching a creative career path.

K. Jennifer Bedford’s work in photography and lens-based media has been featured in international publications and exhibited in galleries across North America, Europe, and Africa. She holds a Master’s degree in Communication and New Media, and an Honours BA in Studio Art and Multimedia from McMaster University. Jennifer is passionate about helping students find their creative voice and build meaningful, real-world skills.
Tom Feiler is a Canadian photographer and visual artist working across fine art, film, and commercial photography. He holds degrees from Toronto Metropolitan University and OCAD University and has completed a residency at the Banff Centre. An award-winning artist, his work has been recognized at the Cannes International Advertising Festival and screened internationally. Tom teaches at Durham College’s School of Media, Art & Design, drawing on industry and academic experience to support and inspire emerging image-makers.
Kevin D. Fraser is an award-winning, internationally screened documentary filmmaker. A former TV writer, Kevin has worked on over a dozen different TV shows, from live events to animated series. A graduate of York and TMU, Kevin has been a professor at Durham College since 2013.
