In a course, each assessment (discussions, tests, assignments, essays, reports, and exams) is assigned a weight, determining its importance in the final grade. The weighted grade system ensures that more significant assessments, like exams and projects, have a greater impact on your overall performance than smaller tasks like homework. How are weighted grades calculated? Here's a simplified example to illustrate how weighted grades might work: Category Weight Exam 1 30% Lab Report 20% Final Project 25% Class Participation 15% Midterm Test 10% Total 100% In this scenario, Exam 1 has the most significant impact on the final grade, accounting for 30% of the total. Next is the Final Project at 25%, then the Lab Report at 20%, Class Participation at 15% and the midterm test worth 10%. The weights always add up to 100%, reflecting the entirety of the course grade. Using the above example, here is what a student’s marks may look like. Exam 1 worth 30% - student earned 30/50 on the exam Lab Report worth 20% - student earned 25/30 on the lab report Final Project worth 25% - student earned 22/30 on the final project Class Participation worth 15% - student earned 12/15 for class participation Midterm Test worth 10% - student earned 18/20 on the midterm test Step 1: Convert each assignment’s score to a percentage Convert Each Assignment’s Score to a percentage by dividing the student’s score by the total possible score and then multiply by 100. Exam 1: Score 30/50 Percentage: 30/50 X 100= 60% Lab Report: Score 25/30 Percentage: 25/30 X 100= 83.33% Final Project: 22/30 Percentage: 22/30 X 100= 73.33% Class Participation: Score 12/15 Percentage: 12/15 X 100= 80% Midterm Test: 18/20 Percentage: 18/20 X 100= 90% Step 2: Multiply each percentage by its weight Multiply each percentage by its corresponding weight (express as a decimal). Exam 1 (30% weight): Weighted Score: 60% × 0.30=18.00 Lab Report (20% weight): Weighted Score: 83.33% × 0.20=16.67 Final Project (25% weight): Weighted Score: 73.33% × 0.25=18.33 Class Participation (15% weight): Weighted Score: 80% × 0.15=12.00 Midterm Test (10% weight): Weighted Score: 90% × 0.10= 9.00 Step 3: Add all of the weighted scores Add all of the weighted scores to get the final mark. Final Mark=18.00 + 16.67 + 18.33 + 12.00 + 9.00 = 74.00 Example Summary The student’s final mark, considering the weighted contributions of each assignment, is 74.00 out of 100. This reflects the combined impact of their performance on the exam, lab report, final project, class participation, and midterm test, each weighted according to its importance in the overall assessment.
