Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)

Overview

This is a two day, interactive workshop that will prepare the individual to provide suicide first aid intervention. Through small group discussions and skills practice this workshop will teach the Suicide Intervention Model, providing a practical guide to doing suicide interventions.

Those completing the workshop will be better able to:

  • Identify people who have thoughts of suicide
  • Understand how beliefs and attitudes can affect suicide interventions
  • Seek a shared understanding of the reasons for thoughts of suicide and the reasons for living
  • Review current risk and develop a plan to increase safety from suicidal behaviour for an agreed amount of time
  • Follow up on safety commitments, accessing further help as needed

This course is offered to everyone. Anyone can benefit from Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). It is open to members of the general public, caregivers, teachers, health service providers, emergency workers, frontline workers who deal with the public, volunteers, human resources professionals, employers and community groups are just a few of the groups who have benefited from ASIST.
