Program Description

The National Payroll Institute, formerly The Canadian Payroll Association, offers the only payroll certifications in Canada: the Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) and the Certified Payroll Manager (CPM). These programs prepare payroll practitioners to manage the compliance requirements of an organization's annual payroll cycle, deliver clear and reliable payroll information, and contribute a payroll perspective to organizational policy and payroll discussions.

The Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) certification builds on the PCP compliance knowledge by preparing seasoned professionals to manage a payroll department. It provides you with the knowledge to make decisions, supervise and manage, and contribute a payroll perspective to organizational policy and strategy discussions.

Students who wish to enroll in the CPM program must have completed their Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation, submit the Payroll Experience Prerequisite Application and received approval from the National Payroll Institute. The Payroll Experience Prerequisite Application can be found on the website; www.payroll.ca, under Certification.

Durham College offers 3 of the academic courses required to complete the CPM certification. (See current Program of Study below) To register students must;

  • Register in the course with Durham College
  • Upon successful completion transfer the credit to CPA

Note:The National Payroll Institute requires a grade of 65% on the final exam and 65% overall in order for the credit to be accepted toward their certifications. Also, the completion of the Work Experience Requirement Application (WERA) is a requirement for certification. For additional details, visit www.payroll.ca or email certification@payroll.ca
