Program Description

The Establishing a Contracting Small Business in Ontario stacked micro-credential program allows individuals already experienced in trades or construction to develop the skills and knowledge required to set up and operate their own enterprise. Students will develop a viable business plan that will meet industry-specific regulatory requirements and establish the foundation needed to begin their business operations. With a specific focus on doing business in Ontario, participants will build the skills and knowledge needed to comply with relevant health and safety regulations, follow requirements of the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB), adhere to industry and labour laws, and fulfill obligations relating to mandatory employee training.

A digital badge will be awarded upon successful completion of this Micro-credential. After successful completion of all courses in the Program of Study you must notify us via email at pplbadges@durhamcollege.ca. Once verified, a digital badge will be issued to you.

Micro-credential Requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) including Grade 12 English (C or U) and Grade 12 Math (C, M or U)
    OR
    Grade 12 equivalency certificate achieved through College academic upgrading
    OR
    Mature Student Status (19 years of age or older) with Grade 12 English (C or U) and Grade 12 Math (C, M or U)

  • You must maintain an overall average of 60% or a GPA of 2.0 in order to graduate
  • A minimum of 25% of courses must be completed through Durham College.

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be equipped to:

  • Establish and run an operationally sound construction contracting small business in Ontario which adheres to regulatory and legislative requirements.

Note: Students obtain a digital badge after completing each of the four micro-credentials and then an overall Establishing a Contracting Small Business in Ontario stacked micro-credential badge attesting to the successful completion of all four. (note that this is specific to Durham College).
