Home Flood Risk Assessment

HOME 1180

This course is aimed at providing students and current industry professionals both the theory and technical practice on identifying the broader factors that influence urban household flood risk in Canada including climate change, municipal engineering and practices, government land development policies and building and electrical codes. They will also have a basic understanding of the evolution of the availability of flood risk insurance to protect homeowners. The course provides the learner with an in-depth understanding of how to complete a visual assessment of overland, infiltration and sewer back up risks at homes built during different eras of development, identify opportunities to reduce these risks and where further investigation is needed. By the end of the course learners will have demonstrated proficiency in the use of a nationally recognized flood risk assessment tool by completing one full flood risk assessment at a home of their choosing. While open to anyone, the course has been built to complement the existing training of home inspectors, municipal engineers, emergency managers, landscape designers, home construction and renovation professionals. Insurance adjusters will also benefit from this training so they can provide improved customer service to their clientele.

Also required: Camera with flash (phone is fine), flashlight, measuring tape, temperature/humidity gauge, moisture metre. Participants receive more information about these at the start of the course.
