Observing The Young Child

Code:
CHLD 1383

Observation as the primary method for gathering information about young children will be the focus of the course. Observation is a critical factor affecting the decision making processes in the early childhood setting. This course examines and practices observation techniques and methods. Observing and recording skills will assist with understanding children’s needs and interests which will impact pedagogy and curriculum as well as child guidance strategies. Students will deepen their understanding of child development and behaviours by translating theoretical knowledge into concrete actions and decisions for children in the early learning and care environment. Through introduction to a variety of information gathering strategies, students will learn to monitor children’s progress as well as ensuring effective communication and documenting processes. In addition, to positively influence children’s development and learning through developmentally appropriate practices.
