A highly specialized and valued continuous improvement specialist, the Lean Black Belt is effective on the front line leading high-impact transformational improvement projects and equally adept working with the senior leadership team to design, deploy, and manage their Lean operational excellence strategic plan. Building on the Lean Green Belt comprehensive suite of improvement tools and methods, Black Belts create a more profound understanding of process and value stream behaviour by employing analytical methods using process data.

A Lean Black Belt possesses a comprehensive understanding of the complete Lean body of knowledge and basic quality, change management, and project management principles, tools and methods. The Black Belt is a quality and improvement coach to Yellow Belts, Green Belts, and managers alike.

The pinnacle of Lean achievement, the Black Belt leads complex, value stream focused, transformational projects, employing analytical methods, a broad suite of improvement tools and methods, and has the ability to enable others to visualize the “true” current state of operations and inspire them a vision a future state where process waste has been eliminated, process output has been optimized, and customers needs and expectations consistently being met.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Leverage an understanding of basic statistics and employ graphical analysis to visualize process performance and routinely collect and analyze operational data to assess process control and stability as well as overall capability (ability to meet target service levels).
  • Enable organizations to optimize their value streams to enhance customer experience.
  • Assist senior leadership in designing, deploying, and managing their operational excellence strategy using “Hoshin Kanri” methods and the “X-Matrix” framework.
  • Understand and articulate the environmental benefits resulting from Lean improvement projects and initiatives.
  • Assisting in the selection, prioritization, planning, and execution of successful improvement projects, including coaching and mentor of Lean, Yellow, and Green Belts and management.

  • This course is delivered virtually through an interactive online platform in conjunction with Algonquin College. You require access to a computer with high-speed internet and camera for the duration of each class. By enrolling in this course, you consent to the sharing of your personal information with Algonquin College for registration purposes.
  • Students will receive a course completion certificate directly from Algonquin College upon successful completion of the course.
  • Withdrawals are only accepted up to 3 business days prior to the course start date (withdrawal fees will apply). No refunds or withdrawals are permitted after this date.

    Note: The Lean Belt program is a progressive learning path. Apart from the first course, each course has a prerequisite, the preceding course(s) or equivalent training is required before registering;

  • Lean White Belt – PROJ 1986: no prerequisite
  • Lean Yellow Belt – PROJ 2986: White Belt prerequisite (or equivalent)
  • Lean Green Belt – PROJ 1985: White Belt and Yellow Belt prerequisite (or equivalent)
  • Lean Black Belt – PROJ 2985: White Belt, Yellow Belt, and Green Belt prerequisite (or equivalent)
