Program Description

This program will examine the principles of human behaviour related to complex issues such as co-dependency as an addiction, criminal and psychopathic minds, cults and terrorism as well as domestic, sexual and workplace violence. The causes, consequences and prevention of crime and criminal behaviour will be explored. The psychology behind why individuals become criminals and why people are attracted to those with deviant behaviours will be studied.

Certificate Requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) OR
  • Grade 12 equivalency certificate achieved through College academic upgrading OR
  • Mature Student Status (19 years of age or older)
  • You must maintain an overall average of 60% or a GPA of 2.0 in order to graduate
  • A minimum of 25% of courses must be completed through Durham College.

Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be equipped to:

  • Examine the psychological theories which can be contributed to criminal behaviour
  • Interpret how social (gender, culture, age, poverty, race, family history, cults), psychological (personality, biological, chemical) and economic factors influence criminal behaviour and co-dependency
  • Analyze and explain the use of forensic and correctional psychology and preventions in policing and the Canadian court system
  • Compare the various therapies used to treat violent/delinquent individuals

  • Community-based victim-oriented resource centres
