This certificate program provides practical training in the commercial construction management field. The program emphasizes two key areas of construction management: the interpretation and understanding of commercial project documents (working drawings, specifications, soils reports, contracts, etc.), and the preparation of estimates and construction schedules. Construction Estimating is designed to improve the knowledge and skill level of people working or wanting to work as estimators in the construction industry. Construction estimators analyze the costs of and prepare estimates on construction projects. They may specialize in estimating costs for civil engineering, architectural, structural, electrical and mechanical construction projects or they may specialize in estimating costs for one construction trade in particular. This new program was developed in consultation with industry experts and is geared to anyone who has an interest in working in the construction and trades industry. It consists of three micro credentials; graduates will hold a Jobsite Readiness Recognition of Achievement. The three micro-credentials are to the right on this table:
  • Construction Jobsite Safety
  • Using Construction Tools
  • Interior Residential Construction Techniques
The first portion of this micro-credential consists of the following safety certifications: Working at Heights, Confined Space Entry in Construction and Emergency First Aid/CPR. Upon passing each one of these certifications, students complete a short course which is focused on the safe handling and storage of construction materials, as well as on self-care techniques such as dressing appropriately for outdoor work on a construction site, meeting jobsite expectations, and effective teamwork. The Using Construction Tools micro-credential program will provide students with the opportunity to learn basic skills in using hand and power tools, and then apply those skills while learning to build or install basic elements commonly associated with construction projects. Upon completion of the program, students will be prepared to safely choose and use the appropriate hand or power tools on a jobsite. In this micro-credential students will safely apply their knowledge of hand tools and power tools through common interior residential construction techniques. These techniques include installing drywall, sanding and painting, laying flooring and tiles, building stairs and railings (and construction railings) and installing trim and doors.
