Indigenous Populations

This course has students explore historical and current issues affecting Indigenous communities in Canada with a primary focus on First Nation, Metis, and Inuit populations. Students will learn about the history of colonialism in Canada and its impact on Indigenous populations. This course will also examine current, and past policies, practices, systems and laws contributing to the oppression of Indigenous communities (e.g. The Indian Act, Residential School System, 60’s Scoop). Students will also study contemporary issues impacting Indigenous populations (e.g. National Inquiry into Murdered and Missing Indigenous Woman and Girls, Quality of life on Indigenous Reservations, Involvement in the Child Welfare and Criminal Justice Systems), and initiatives to promote reconciliation (e.g. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada).
