Addictions and Mental Health: Theory and Practice is an advanced course that builds upon the knowledge and skills developed in several prerequisite courses. Students will be introduced to the different models of addiction, current perspectives on mental health, the different treatment methodologies derived from those models and perspectives as well as current “best practices” used with clients who present with addiction and mental health related issues. The student will learn and demonstrate the ability to apply case management principles, including the components of comprehensive clinical assessment, treatment matching, treatment planning and the use of relapse prevention strategies. The course is intended to not only assist the student in developing skills to effectively work with individuals with addiction and mental health related issues but also to hone their generic counseling skills and practices.
