Often referred to as the "glue" of supply chains, transportation is a core element of logistics management, which itself is an art and science focused on the purposeful engineering and strategic coordination of systems and processes that ensure the efficient, effective, and seamless integration of transportation, distribution, and storage functionalities. Advancements in transportation technology have been key enablers of the rise of global trade, offering broad product selection at reasonable prices to consumers in developed economies and lifting millions in developing economies out of abject poverty.
In this course, students will review the four primary modes of transportation – road, rail, marine, and air – to better understand their particular features, benefits, and limitations, and how they link together through the concept of “intermodalism.” We will also examine the importance of transportation security in the context of new risks facing modern supply chains. Furthermore, students will gain a better appreciation for the economic impact that transportation has upon businesses and firms, along with the Logistics Manager’s role in corporate strategy development.
