Healthcare Code White Training - Violence Prevention and Conflict Avoidance for Healthcare Workers and Healthcare Security Guards. (Two parallel programs, one for security guards and one for clinical and non-clinical staff.)
Description: Code White and Aggressive Patient/Violence Prevention has become a necessary component of healthcare training across Canada. In Ontario The Ministries of Labour and Health released a report in 2018 making Code White training a necessary component of staff safety. Reality dictates that nearly ALL Code White calls are attended by Security Guards in the hospital at the time.
Security guards who work in Healthcare or Hospital environments have additional authorities that no other guard in Ontario have. This distinction is not taught in the Provincial PSISA licensing course nor directly to guard companies who are contracted to act as security in these workplaces.
Likewise, Healthcare staff, clinical and non-clinical, are often not taught how to appropriately deal with patient violence or the physical use of restraints. The eventualities are covered in this online course.
The provisions of the Ontario Mental Health Act as well as Patient Restraint legislations are taught in depth within this program plus the “how to’s” of dealing with visitor’s vs regular criminals and trespassers.
The other key area of study, not included in any other training, is that of patient restraint and the use of passive restraint systems. Hospital “codes” are unique to healthcare and unlike the 10 codes, each one impacts different responders in a different way and according to internal procedures. Code White is a behavioural emergency and can include patients, criminal behaviour, visitors, or all of these all at the same time. The “use of force” or “least restraint” methods used to restrain a patient are not the same as the use of force to apprehend a criminal or break up a fight and must be articulated differently.
Content: - Workplace Safety in Healthcare workplaces and Introduction to Code White training. - Mandatory training requirements of Patient Restraint Code White and Canadian Law; where is the line between criminal behaviour and patient care? - Situational Awareness and Officer Safety for hospital security - Emotional Intelligence and Dealing with Cognitively Impaired patients vs visitors. - Understanding Mental illnesses and the Mental Health Act requirements for treatment, detention methods and “least restraint.” “Charting” vs Note Taking in hospital settings. - What is Doctor/Patient confidentiality and who can be told what and when, when it comes to dealing with violent patients.
