Program Description

Whether it's a small business or a large publicly traded corporation, accountants are needed in all areas of the economy, in both the public and private sectors. Our program is taught by industry-connected professionals who will give you the skills and knowledge to excel in the field. You will learn how to apply the latest tools and technology - making you instantly valuable to an employer. You will have the opportunity to hone your skills and gain valuable work experience through a field placement. This program gives you a powerful combination of knowledge, skills and real-life work experience.

Admission Requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) including Grade 12 English (C or U) and Grade 11 Math (C, M or U)
    OR
    Grade 12 equivalency certificate achieved through College academic upgrading
    OR
    Mature Student Status (19 years of age or older) with Grade 12 English (C or U) and Grade 11 Math (C, M or U)

  • Equivalent secondary school diploma from another province or territory in Canada (Please note: A recognized equivalent to an OSSD may be accepted if you meet the levels, subjects and overall averages required for admission to the college. Generally the requirement is successful completion of a Grade 12 diploma except in Quebec where the equivalent is Secondary V)
    OR
    Equivalent secondary school diploma from outside of Canada. Applicants who have been educated outside of Canada must have their documents evaluated by a credential assessment service (ICAS) and submit proof of educational qualifications in order to determine if their level of achievement is equivalent to an OSSD. To obtain a Credential Assessment Report visit either ICAS (1.800.321.6021) or WES (1.866.343.0070)

  • You must maintain an overall average of 60% or a GPA of 2.0 in order to graduate
  • A minimum of 25% of courses must be completed through Durham College.

Program Admission

Note: Please do not send official transcripts by mail or fax. An electronic copy of your transcript can be emailed to us at ppladmissions@durhamcollege.ca with your program admission form.

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be equipped to:

  • Record financial transactions in compliance with Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, for sole proprietorships, partnerships, private enterprises, publicly accountable enterprises and non-profit organizations
  • Prepare and present financial statements, reports and other documents in compliance with Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for sole proprietorships, partnerships and private enterprises
  • Contribute to strategic decision-making by applying advanced management accounting concepts
  • Prepare individuals' and Canadian-controlled private corporations' income tax returns and individuals' basic tax planning in compliance with relevant legislation and regulations
  • Analyze and evaluate organizational structures and the interdependence of functional areas, and contribute to the development of strategies which positively impact financial performance
  • Analyze and evaluate, within a Canadian context, the impact of economic variables, legislation, ethics, technological advances and the environment on an organization's operations
  • Analyze and evaluate an organization's internal control system, taking risk management into account
  • Contribute to strategic decision-making by applying advanced financial management concepts
  • Co-ordinate the planning, implementation, management and evaluation of team projects by applying project management principles
