Program Description

In order to keep their financial records up-to-date and accurate, companies rely on bookkeepers who know how to use accounting software and applications. This program will teach you the essentials needed to succeed in this field.

Certificate Requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) including Grade 12 English (C or U) and Grade 11 Math (C, M or U)
    OR
    Grade 12 equivalency certificate achieved through College academic upgrading
    OR
    Mature Student Status (19 years of age or older) with Grade 12 English (C or U) and Grade 11 Math (C, M or U)

  • You must maintain an overall average of 60% or a GPA of 2.0 in order to graduate
  • A minimum of 25% of courses must be completed through Durham College.

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be equipped to:

  • Use tax preparation software to prepare individual income tax returns and basic tax planning in compliance with relevant legislation and regulations
  • Apply generally accepted accounting principles to produce financial statements and reports for proprietorships, partnerships and corporations
  • Support the management needs of the bookkeeping function, including planning, forecasting, budgeting, cost and revenue management
  • Create reports by using spreadsheet and database programs to support business analysis and decision-making
  • Apply Canadian and Ontario payroll recordkeeping practices, procedures, requirements and regulations to employee compensation in accordance with current legislation
