Program Description

Compliance with workplace health and safety standards has become more important than ever before. This program examines the fundamentals of occupational health and safety and addresses essential management practices in this area. This program is ideally suited to those who already have business experience and are interested in furthering their career in the health and safety sector.

The Canadian Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) offers scholarship awards that are available to students enrolled in this program. To learn more about the scholarships available and how to apply directly with the CCOHS, please visit there website CCOHS.

Certificate Requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) including Grade 12 English (C or U) and Grade 11 Math (C, M or U)
    OR
    Grade 12 equivalency certificate achieved through College academic upgrading
    OR
    Mature Student Status (19 years of age or older) with Grade 12 English (C or U) and Grade 11 Math (C, M or U)

  • You must maintain an overall average of 60% or a GPA of 2.0 in order to graduate
  • A minimum of 25% of courses must be completed through Durham College.

Note: When you have successfully completed all courses within the program of study and apply to graduate for this certificate, you must forward a copy of your valid Standard First Aid Certificate, Basic Rescuer CPR training level A, B or C to our office.

Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be equipped to:

  • Conduct site inspections and program audits to ensure appropriate management of environmental risks and hazards in the workplace
  • Design appropriate ergonomic solutions to a variety of job and workplace challenges
  • Design programs, processes, and policies that meet all relevant legislation, law, and standards for the assurance of workplace health and safety
  • Utilize a variety of specific tools and techniques to address complex management and labour challenges associated with occupational health and safety
