Program Description

Decorators work in fulfilling careers as entrepreneurs or as part of design teams to transform living and work spaces to meet client needs. Potential projects include house staging, sales rooms, restaurants and hotels. Through hands-on projects and real-life application, graduates will have developed professional and creative design skills including the ability to render and present industry-standard design boards using contemporary technologies. The program is offered part-time and each course is offered asynchronously online to fit your busy schedule.

Durham College’s comprehensive Interior Decorating Certificate is recognized by the Decorator & Designers Association of Canada (DDA Canada). Students currently enrolled in this program are invited to apply for student membership in the Decorator & Designers Association. Graduates of the program are invited to apply for accredited membership on the Decorator & Designers Association website.

Certificate Requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)
    OR
    Grade 12 equivalency certificate achieved through College academic upgrading
    OR
    Mature Student Status (19 years of age or older)

  • You must maintain an overall average of 60% or a GPA of 2.0 in order to graduate
  • A minimum of 25% of courses must be completed through Durham College.

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be equipped to:

  • Prepare and present professional and creative digital design boards that meet a variety of client needs and accurately convey the design vision
  • Apply effective business practices to client interactions, promotion, marketing and sales activities, and small business management tasks
  • Collaborate with industry professionals to ensure project objectives are completed within client timelines and budget.
  • Design solutions for spaces by using materials and finishes to support different purposes and functions.

Career Options

In the field of interior decorating you will have the flexibility to work part-time or full-time, and enjoy the satisfaction of making your creative vision into reality. Entrepreneurs can work on residential projects to beautify living spaces or stage for sale, or exercise their creativity on specialty projects like yachts, bed and breakfasts, and day spas. A qualified interior decorator can also work as part of a bigger design team in areas such as architect's offices, interior design offices, engineering offices, property management offices, retailers, boutique stores, restaurants, art galleries and museums, hotels, condominium corporations, model homes, and home builder's décor studios. Decorators also work for kitchen and bath design companies, showrooms, staging, television and set design.
