Program Description

The Retirement Communities Management program is offered to meet the increasing demand for administrators in retirement homes. The program will help you develop skills in planning and implementing operational procedures and providing collaborative leadership in retirement communities. Topic areas include: physical building considerations, financial management, food nutrition and hospitality management, healthy adult aging, human resources, marketing, client-centered care and the management of resources. You will finish the program with a field placement which will provide an opportunity to relate classroom theory to the industry.

Admission Requirements

  • Applicants must have successfully completed a recognized post-secondary institution degree or diploma in one of these preferred subject areas and/or have relevant management/work experience:
    • Health Science/Community Service
    • Food and Nutrition Management
    • Recreation and Leisure
    • Hospitality & Tourism
    • Business Administration
  • Must be proficient in English
  • You must maintain an overall average of 60% or a GPA of 2.0 in order to graduate
  • A minimum of 25% of courses must be completed through Durham College.

Program Admission

We do not accept photocopies or photos as this will make them unofficial as the school seal will not show.

Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be equipped to:

  • Plan and implement operational strategies and leadership practices in the retirement communities sector
  • Analyze, forecast, and budget revenue and expense targets and recommend effective strategies for the organization
  • Develop and promote sales and marketing strategies that attract and retain suitable seniors to retirement communities
  • Design and implement plans for facilities management, continuous quality improvement, life safety and environmental requirements
  • Establish a human resources management framework to enhance employee and management relations in accordance with ethical standards, current laws, regulations and professional needs
  • Identify and promote awareness of the psychological, physiological, social and spiritual needs of seniors
  • Assess, plan, and implement proper nutrition standards for clients
  • Contribute to the local and global community through social responsibility, economic commitment and environmental stewardship
  • Communicate effectively in a caring and inclusive environment with staff, family and residents
