Program Description

The Strategies and Assistive Technologies for Learning Disabilities Durham College Certificate program provides students with a theoretical understanding of learning disabilities, a range of strategies relevant to specific learning disabilities and the ability to select and use appropriate technological interventions to support a learner of any age.

Employment opportunities are available in elementary, secondary and post-secondary academic settings to support students with learning disabilities. Due to the advanced nature of the courses in this program, students with previous (or current) experience working in an educational setting will have greater success in the program.

This new program is comprised of two Recognition of Achievement (ROA) programs that stack to a Durham College Certificate. The first ROA, Fundamental Principles of Learning Disabilities, will provide students with a theoretical understanding of learning disabilities, concurrent disorders, and the legal obligations of educators. In the second ROA, Applied Learning Disability Strategies for Educators, the student will apply appropriate strategies and assistive technologies to a range of learner needs.

Due to the advanced nature of the courses in this program, students with previous (or current) experience working in an educational setting will have greater success in the program.

Certificate Requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) including Grade 12 English (C or U) and Grade 12 Math (C, M or U)
    OR
    Grade 12 equivalency certificate achieved through College academic upgrading
    OR
    Mature Student Status (19 years of age or older) with Grade 12 English (C or U) and Grade 12 Math (C, M or U)

  • You must maintain an overall average of 60% or a GPA of 2.0 in order to graduate
  • A minimum of 25% of courses must be completed through Durham College.

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be equipped to:

  • Recommend assistive learning strategies based on the results of a professional assessment of the learner.
  • Support learners in the use of assistive technologies that align effectively with their disabilities and learning strategies.
  • Advocate for the use of and access to learning strategies to support learners academically, personally and socially.
  • Explain the impact/effect of mental and physical health on the academic success/progress for persons with learning disabilities.
  • Prepare documentation to ensure learners receive appropriate accommodations and supports in various environments and academic fields.
  • Apply reflective practice in a manner that shows respect for diversity, equity and inclusion within the learner population.

Potential career and industry options may include:

  • Graduates of this program will have the skills to work in elementary, secondary, and post-secondary academic support services. This certificate can lead to employment in a number of areas including as a mentor, learning strategist, accessibility assistant, or accommodated testing assistant. In addition, individuals currently employed in education further their careers by developing expertise in this growing area.
