Program Description

This certificate is designed to prepare you to work in various aspects of the sewing industry. It may lead to self-employment as a tailor, or finding employment in retail fabric and clothing stores and entry level pattern and or sample makers in the industrial sector.

Features:

  • Entirely instructor-led with hands on training.
  • In-depth courses with focus on professional techniques and terminology.

Note: The College will provide a sewing machine during class if required, however these are not available for any home assignments. You will need a sewing machine of your own, in good repair, in order to complete the required home assignments.

Certificate Requirements

  • Mature Student Status (19 years of age or older)
  • A minimum of 25% of courses must be completed through Durham College.

Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be equipped to:

  • Draft customized patterns and alter commercial patterns to fit specific requirements for a variety of garments
  • Construct a variety of casual and tailored garments with professionally finished details to meet specific standards
  • Alter ready to wear garments to correct the fit for various figure types
  • Measure, design, and construct drapery and home decor items to meet specific requirements
