I need to register for my field placement, but OSAP has not provided me with my funds yet. What do I do? Please send an email to pplplacements@durhamcollege.ca to advise the placement officer. Regardless of your OSAP status, you will be required to submit all of your complete documentation by the posted deadlines. Can I call or email for placement status updates? Every student is provided with a grade/feedback in DC Connect on each submission. If you receive a "P" (Pass) for all items, the next step is for the Placement Officer to confirm and/or secure your agency and then complete the necessary steps to clear you to begin. We encourage students to check DC Connect and your DCMAIL.ca account daily for updates and any important communication. Depending on your program and the type of agency you are to be placed with, securing and confirming a placement can take time. You will be contacted as soon as your agency has been confirmed and approved. How many hours must I complete for placement? The number of hours vary between programs. Please view the Field Placement course description for the required hours for your program's placement course(s) on the PPL website. I work full time. How can I do a placement also? Students may find it necessary to make personal adjustments to work and/or family schedules in order to complete the field placement. Options to be considered are: leaves of absence, use of vacation time, extended work hours to free up hours for placement, etc. We recognize that such arrangements require a great deal of time and effort on the students’ (and their families’) part and applaud their commitment to the achievement of their goals. How many hours can I do per week? Students are required to arrange a mutually suitable schedule with the host agency supervisor. When arranging their schedule, students must ensure they meet the required number of placement hours by the end date of the course. Please note: The ECE placements require a minimum number of hours to be completed in each shift – please view your specific program’s schedule requirements for further details. May I do my placement where I work? Doing your placement where you work is a conflict of interest and is not permitted. May I do my placement where a relative is employed? Students are not permitted to complete a placement experience where they have a relative or familial relationship with anyone with supervisory responsibility at the agency. This would be considered a conflict of interest. My agency host wants to pay me, is this allowed? Field placements are unpaid learning opportunities, and therefore, students are not permitted to accept payment for the field placement experience. May I begin my placement before the course begins? No. Students must ensure that they have been officially cleared prior to beginning their hours at the host agency. Clearance will not occur prior to the start date for the placement course. How will I know when I can begin my hours? Each student will receive official clearance via email to their DCMAIL.ca account only advising them of placement details and official clearance date. Students cannot start placement before official clearance is received. I have had a criminal reference check completed in the past, do I need a new one? Mental Health Nursing Capstone This online course will include a series of applied learning activities/assignments to help consolidate learning across the program. No agency hours will be required, therefore, no paperwork to submit. Students interested in the Capstone course may register and pay online via our website. PERINATAL/OBSTETRICS NURSING PRACTICUM In Person Onsite (in-hospital) practicums may be available with hospitals willing and able to accommodate students at this time. Remote or Blended placements are not available for this program's practicum. Students who have had placement requests deferred from previous terms will have requests prioritized, should in-hospital placements become available. For mental health nursing placements, opportunities with community agencies may be possible should students wish to identify and secure a placement themselves. Placement opportunities secured by students, must be with a community agency (e.g.: long-term care homes, correctional services, community mental health agencies, hospices, etc). Students are not permitted to contact hospitals to arrange their own placement opportunities. These MUST be arranged by the PPL Placement Officer. • Library Technician Diploma Field Placements These placements are hosted by Mohawk College. Students must have completed the required prerequisite courses in order to be approved to register for this course. Students will be provided with permission to register, via email, once a prerequisite audit (including GPA) has been completed and all pre-placement documentation has been submitted/approved. Students are required to research and secure their own placements. Students must be supervised by someone with the educational qualifications of a librarian, library technician or teacher-librarian. In Person Option: Students complete their placement IN PERSON for a library or information service. This placement will require pre-placement documentation to be submitted according to the term's deadline dates on the PPL Field Placement Page. Remote Option: Students complete their placement remotely from home for a library or information service. Remote placements can be secured at agencies anywhere in Canada, providing the agency is willing to support this option and can meet the learning objectives and supervision requirements for each placement. This placement will require pre-placement documentation to be submitted according to the term's deadline dates on the PPL Field Placement Page. • Retirement Communities Management Graduate Certificate Field Placement This placement is hosted by Centennial College. This placement must be completed IN PERSON. Students are required to research and secure their own placements. This placement will require pre-placement documentation to be submitted according to the term's deadline dates on the PPL Field Placement Page. Students must have completed the required prerequisite courses in order to be approved to register for this course. Students will be provided with permission to register, via email, once a prerequisite audit (including GPA) has been completed and all pre-placement documentation has been submitted/approved. • Social Service Worker Diploma Field Placement 1, 2 & 3 Students can choose the following placement formats: IN PERSON, REMOTE, or Hybrid. (Students must be supervised at all times by an appropriately credentialed agency supervisor). Remote placements can be secured at agencies anywhere in Canada, providing the agency is willing to support this option and can meet the learning objectives and supervision requirements for each placement. Students are required to research and secure their own placements. Placements 2 & 3 must be completed with the same agency, which is different from the agency where they complete field placement 1. This placement will require pre-placement documentation to be submitted according to the term's deadline dates on the PPL Field Placement Page. Students must have completed the required prerequisite courses in order to be approved to register for this course. Students will be provided with permission to register, via email, once a prerequisite audit (including GPA) has been completed and all pre-placement documentation has been submitted/approved. • Victimology Graduate Certificate Field Placement Students can choose the following placement formats: IN PERSON, REMOTE, or HYBRID. Remote placements can be secured at agencies anywhere in Canada, providing the agency is willing to support this option and can meet the learning objectives and supervision requirements for each placement. Students are required to research and secure their own placements. This placement will require pre-placement documentation to be submitted according to the term's deadline dates on the PPL Field Placement Page.
