Program Description

Occupational Health Nursing (OHN) provides integrated occupational health and safety services to employers and employees. The courses in this program will enhance the knowledge and skills of experienced occupational health nurses and will assist with meeting the application qualifications for the Canadian Nurses Association specialty certification examination (COHN-C).

Certificate Requirements

  • Current RN College of Nurses of Ontario Certificate of Registration (proof of registration number required).
  • You must maintain an overall average of 60% or a GPA of 2.0 in order to graduate
  • A minimum of 25% of courses must be completed through Durham College.

Current Program of Study Students are required to print or save a copy of the Program of Study when beginning the program. This document contains critical details about program progression and graduation requirements specific to the academic year in which your program was started.

Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be equipped to:

  • Complete all tasks associated with occupational health nursing in accordance with all relevant laws, legislation, ethical and workplace best practices
  • Develop and/or recommend approaches to the awareness, treatment, and prevention of workplace hazards
  • Apply an understanding of the history and biomechanical principles of ergonomics to workstation and/or task analysis and design
  • Conduct comprehensive physical assessments on a variety of individuals
  • Design and implement health promotion programs and strategies in the workplace
